The Euro Handball Pride Championship in 2026 will be held in Amsterdam, at the same time as the WorldPride takes place in the Dutch capital. And it is a very special reason that Amsterdam celebrates WorldPride exactly this year.

For the first time ever, Amsterdam will host WorldPride. WorldPride is a global event that promotes visibility and awareness of LGBTQ+ issues internationally. It is licensed by InterPride and organised by one of its members. Pride Amsterdam has been a member since 2011. The first WorldPride was held in Rome in 2000 and subsequently organised in Jerusalem, London, Toronto, Madrid, New York, Copenhagen and Sydney. In 2025, Washington took charge of the organisation.

The reason for bringing WorldPride to Amsterdam in 2026 is the fact that in that year we will celebrate 25 years of open civil marriage. In doing so, the Netherlands made world history on 1 April 2001 . Although many countries followed, there is still a long way to go in the fight for equal rights. Not only far from home, but also in Europe and our own Kingdom, LGBTQ+ are still not treated equally. In many places, equal and acquired rights are under pressure and, as an LGBTQ+ community, we must visibly and militantly make ourselves heard. The opening up of civil marriage has triggered a first wave, but things are moving too slowly. Therefore, the silver jubilee will once again inspire and connect the world with numerous events and activities.
